Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Pietro Vanni's landscapes are always distinguished by the personal interpretation that the painter from Terzone di Leonessa has always been able to offer. The artist's primary goal is not to achieve a perfect naturalistic rendering (even though he operates within the realm of figurative language). Formally, Vanni is primarily interested in constructing a composition made of pure volumes. In this case, however, the painter creates a more pictorial composition, with a dense and textured layering. The scheme is still geometric, but with an overlapping of planes that is more reminiscent of Cézanne.
Pietro Vanni was a painter originally from Terzone di Leonessa, where he was born in 1925 and passed away in 2002. Self-taught, he long divided his time between his artistic vocation and his social work as a leader of a Catholic-inspired workers' movement. He eventually chose to dedicate himself fully to art, training in Rome with Professor Manzano. He exhibited his works at various events, including the Biennale of Sacred Art in Bologna, where he achieved considerable success.
