Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Pietro Virgilio Lietti's entire pictorial production focuses on landscape. His most recurring subjects are evocative images of the Brianza hinterland, small villages at the foot of the mountains, or farmhouses remote in the countryside.
Pietro Virgilio Lietti's work is distinguished by landscape painting, in which he pursues characteristic views and scenes, imbued with a distinctive lyricism. Hence his penchant for picturesque views and evocative framing. Formally, this translates into an impressionistic, highly animated and dynamic style that ensures freshness and immediacy of execution. His brushstrokes are therefore characterized by a remarkably cursive touch, made up of sudden flashes, effectively capturing the vibrations of light on objects. This is particularly evident in the depiction of the houses, the grassy plain, and the mountains in the background. The entire composition is imbued with a calm sentimentality and a freshness deriving from the artist's technical prowess.
Pietro Virgilio Lietti was born in Monza in 1928. Born into an artistic family, he learned his first lessons from his father, Guido, a sculptor, decorator, and teacher at Villa Reale. Lietti lived and worked in Brianza, and it was primarily its landscapes that inspired his artistic output. His style draws primarily from post-impressionist poetics.
