We are faced with a composition that can be classified as a still life. It features a table covered with a red cloth, on which are placed a raised cake plate containing fruit and a vase of flowers. Still lifes have their origins in sixteenth-century painting, initially as a secondary element in paintings. Only later did they become the true protagonists of the work, giving painters the opportunity to demonstrate their skill. From a platform for creating lifelike, almost tangible and natural objects, they became a motif that allowed for experimentation with new techniques as the centuries progressed. Consider how these subjects also recurred in Impressionist, Expressionist, Cubist, and other works.

The painting on display here clearly demonstrates an expressionist streak. Although still figurative, the painter relies on intense colors, especially a strong, dramatic red that serves as a unifying thread throughout, appearing on the table, background, flowers, and fruit. Perspective is neglected, completely obliterated in the background, where the table and wall seem to merge into one. The brushstrokes are rapid, almost aggressive, as they repeat horizontally and vertically.

The work is signed Pinelli, but it's currently impossible to identify the artist and thus provide a biography. He was a twentieth-century painter who renounced academic notions to express himself in a freer, more creative manner that allowed for impulsiveness.
