Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
This work is a precious testimony to one of the most important projects in Pinuccio Sciola's artistic career. It is a study of the celebrated "Sounding Stones." The subjects represent the typical menhir shape of the sculptures, characterized by the parallel grooves that are Sciola's trademark. In his sculpture, Pinuccio Sciola's informal style is the result of research that transcends form and material to rely on another sense: hearing. In this study, however, we can appreciate how the artist also deeply considered the formal research. This research is based on the flexibility of the material, modeled according to curved movements and rhythms. From a technical standpoint, it is also interesting to appreciate Sciola's skill in rendering his subjects with a few cursive touches of color.
Pinuccio Sciola was born in 1942 in San Sperate and passed away in Cagliari in 2016. He was an important Italian sculptor. He trained at the University of Moncloa in Madrid and upon his return transformed the village of San Sperate with his mural project. In 1973, thanks to a UNESCO recognition, he worked with Siqueiros in Mexico City. During his forty-year career, Sciola participated in the Venice Biennale and exhibited his works at major international events. Beginning in 1996, the "Sounding Stones" project brought Sciola worldwide fame.
