Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the depicted subject, an attempt to convey their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation. In this work, Pio Succi juxtaposes the female portrait, the central subject, with the still life theme, with objects arranged in the foreground.
Pio Succi's style in this work leans toward a concise and essential representation. His pictorial approach, with surrealist overtones, even when the subject is plausible and not abstract, does not invoke a naturalistic rendering. Succi favors a hyper-objective language that focuses on the exaltation of formal values and plasticity. In this sense, this artist's technique is excellent in reproducing almost sculptural figures, permeated by reverberations and reflections of light. From a conceptual perspective, the representation acquires an enigmatic atmosphere, placing them in a refined dreamlike dimension, also determined by the interpretation of color.
Pio Succi (Nizza Monferrato, 1929 - 2007). From the mid-1940s, he directed small jazz orchestras in the numerous dance halls of Piedmont. From the 1950s, he devoted himself almost exclusively to painting, until 2007. Self-taught, Pio Succi created a vast and varied body of work, spanning periods and techniques, while maintaining a wholly original style across the various expressive forms. He explored various artistic movements without ever adhering to any one, almost instinctively maintaining a distinctive style that was recognizable everywhere; in the 1990s, he coined the term "Reactivism," a personal term to summarize his less formal work.
