Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Specifically, the work in question presents an Arcadian-inspired interpretation of landscape. The artist describes a mythical and idealized world, an Eden of peace, poetry, and simplicity.
This Arcadian-style rural scene, typical of the work of artist Gaspard Dughet, stands out for its exquisite craftsmanship. Formally, a miniaturist technique is evident in the artist's precision in achieving a naturalistic rendering of an intricate forest, distinguishing each individual element of foliage and vegetation. The human presence is almost lost in the midst of nature, and the small figures depicted reflect the artist's strong neoclassical taste: their poses are clearly inspired by Greco-Roman statuary. Compositionally, the work also stands out for its exquisitely classicist spirit, evident in the coherent and unified construction, achieved through a studied harmony in the arrangement of its elements. This unity is also ensured by the light that measures the space, determining the distancing of the forest's elements. Indeed, even in monochrome, the artist's technique is so refined and his hatching so precise that it develops a perfect balance of light and shadow, resulting in a natural progression of tones. The formal, typically classicist perfection of this work thus transfigures a delicate rural reality into the mythical dimension of Arcadia, of the primitive and poetic pastoral Eden.
The print was reproduced by Gaspard Dughet (Rome 1615-1675), a French painter also known as Gaspard Poussin (Italianized Gaspare Pussini) due to his relationship with Nicolas Poussin, his sister's husband. It was his brother-in-law's influence that set him on his artistic path, within the context of 17th-century classicism, of which Nicolas Poussin was one of the greatest exponents. The many years spent in contact with nature and his great passion for hunting led Gaspard Dughet towards Arcadian-style landscape painting. The four landscapes frescoed by Dughet in the palace of Pope Innocent X in Piazza Navona in 1650 were important. Some of his works are exhibited at the National Gallery in London.
