Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In this mosaic by Pisor, however, the everyday aspect prevails, the frank and sincere realism of everyday life in a village setting.
This work truly exemplifies Pisor's remarkable skill in mosaic technique. This urban landscape is created with a highly evocative perspective. Through the arrangement of the tiles, the artist creates a concrete and measurable space, perceptible in the arrangement of the buildings and arches. The attention to detail is truly extraordinary in the reproduction of the facades, doorways, and street paving. The use of rectangular tiles creates a beautiful effect, imitating the ancient stone that characterizes a medieval village. Pisor's skill is also evident in his choice of different materials to produce different effects, such as the clever use of pebbles to convey the impression of the crumbling wall on the left.
Pisor is the pen name of Pietro Soranno. His artistic research has focused on mosaic art, in which he has achieved extraordinary technical prowess. Pisor's mosaic production is highly varied and includes works featuring more traditional subjects, such as landscapes, as well as reproductions of ancient works.
