Description of the work
Description of the work
The Holy Family refers to the composition of Jesus' family. The traditional iconography of the Holy Families, which began to appear in Italian art as an independent subject in the second half of the 15th century, consistently features the central nucleus of the Child Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The various variations of this iconographic model depend on the inclusion of additional figures who are related to Jesus, such as Saint Anne, mother of Mary, or the young Saint John, often included with a prophetic function of the Passion of Christ. The work in question is an artist's copy of Pompeo Batoni's Holy Family, created before 1763 and preserved at the Capitoline Museums in Rome.
The execution of this painting respects the pictorial language of Pompeo Batoni's original, pursuing a strongly classicist spirit. The artist, in fact, created the subject by reinterpreting the typical canons of Renaissance painting and classicism in general. This is evident from the monumentality of the Madonna and Child group and its large proportions. Furthermore, the artist strives for a remarkable naturalistic rendering, involving the subjects' features and the draping of their clothing. However, following the rules of classicism, it is a highly idealized type of naturalism. The composition exhibits a strong rationalist spirit that explicitly harks back to Raphaelesque models in its concise pyramidal form.
As we can see from an analysis of the work, the artist who created this original copy possessed an excellent painting technique that allowed him to replicate a typically eighteenth-century classicist style. His style is characterized by excellent naturalistic rendering and a highly complex application of color. Compared to Batoni's prototype, however, he appears to adopt a more synthetic and vibrant application of color.
