Pompilio Mandelli - Landscape

The painter Pompilio Mandelli's work reflects the traits of a truly informal work. In 1947, the painter began his creative process, which gradually culminated in the 1950s with an expressionist and abstract style of painting with an informal feel. This informal influence is evident when the artist breaks with figurative form. Informal art emerged in the 1940s and 1950s. The resulting artistic practice focused on gesture, sign, and pictorial matter. This new artistic paradigm paralleled the trauma of the Second World War. After the suffering in Europe, artists felt the need to react to figurative pictorial conventions and approach formless work, where irrationality and spontaneity of gesture prevail. The artist plays with colors and shapes, tracing on paper what appears to be a landscape immersed in greenery. This representation, without a drawing base, creates a dynamic interplay. The painting, devoid of recognizable figures, perspective, or geometry, creates emotional tension through the application of color. The loose, dense color conveys an intensity that captivates the viewer. Pompilio Mandelli was born in Villarotta di Luzzara, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in 1912. The artist moved to Bologna in 1928, where he had the opportunity to frequent the masters Giorgio Morandi and Virgilio Guidi. After several interprovincial exhibitions under the Fascist regime, 1935 marked the year of his artistic debut at a Littoriali exhibition in Venice, where he won first prize and the right to exhibit at the Biennale the following year. From 1940, Mandelli formed a lifelong working partnership with Francesco Arcangeli. In the years that followed, the artist participated several times in both the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale. In 1968, he was appointed director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, while continuing his artistic career with numerous solo and group exhibitions. He passed away in 2006 in Bologna.
