Description of the work
Description of the work
Paintings depicting sailing ships can be considered genre scenes, which depict an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. In particular, the depiction of simple sailing ships, or other vessels, outside the historical context of a naval battle, began in the 17th and 18th centuries, influenced by travel and exploration of new continents. In the pictorial production of the artist Romolo Pontecorvi, the sailing ship is present in numerous works. Indeed, his most recurring subject is the sea, depicting a port with boats moored. In his work, however, this image becomes symbolic and almost dreamlike, transfigured in his expressionistic interpretation dominated by the color red.
The painting is a perfect example of Romolo Pontecorvi's pictorial style. Indeed, we can see how, even in landscape painting, the artist tends to transfigure reality into an abstraction dominated by the color red. Pontecorvi leaves aside reference points to grasp reality: a landscape rendered synthetic by the painter's almost gestural brushstrokes. However, the entire composition is overturned by color, transforming the perceptible world into a sort of abstract expressionism. Formally, the entire surface of the work is composed of broad brushstrokes that, like a mosaic, balance the chromatic areas made up of different shades of red. In this way, the artist Romolo Pontecorvi achieves a landscape connected to reality, yet with a perfectly harmonious and balanced expressionistic interpretation.
Romolo Pontecorvi was a Roman artist. A monochrome painter on Via Margutta and a pupil of Guttuso, he studied at the Via Ripetta school. Known in Rome as the "red painter," he died in 2002.
