Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory aspect.
The work of painter Walter Pozzi is distinguished by various stylistic registers. It ranges from the more surreal, in which the painter constructs a playful world of acrobats and masked musicians, to the more realist. The present work, a minimalist still life, undoubtedly belongs to the latter category and demonstrates Pozzi's realism, which is very subdued and seeks humble and simple existential values. Formally, this translates into a restrained form that favors a dry formal rendering in a dynamic pictorial style, rich in vibrations. The color palette, based on brown tones, also fits this poetics.
Walter Pozzi was a painter originally from Bergamo, born in 1911. His career developed in Milan, where he frequented the studio of Ermenegildo Agazzi. In 1939, he founded the "La Rotonda" group. In 1945, he founded the "Il Gatto Nero" group, whose activities would influence Milanese artistic life for about a decade. He participated in important exhibitions abroad as well. He passed away in Milan in 1989.
