Description of the work
Description of the work
Presentation by: Valentino Brosio, Principato Piemontese reconstructs the region's history from Roman occupation to the Middle Ages: from the first garrison installations to the founding of new colonies; and then, after the glories and decline of the Roman Empire, the passage under Byzantine jurisdiction, the arrival of the Lombards and the Frankish conquerors, the subsequent introduction of feudal organization, and the struggles of the Piedmontese marquises to defend their possessions, while the star of a new local power, the House of Savoy, loomed on the horizon. Their history was destined to become increasingly intertwined with the events of the peninsula and the process of building a unified state. The rise of the Savoys was neither easy nor unchallenged. Control of the Piedmontese lands was a stake for which powerful contenders competed, and their destinies hinged on the territorial structure, along with the Princes of Piedmont, the Dukes of Monferrato, the Marquises of Saluzzo, and the Lords of Vercelli. The volume's iconographic collection consists of a broad selection from the Teatro Sabaudo, an excellent eighteenth-century collection of engravings, enriched and completed by material more specifically dedicated to the cities and dynasties of the Principality.
