Description of the work
Description of the work
This beautiful sculpture was created by Master Cornelio, a sculptor from Piauí, in northern Brazil. The subject is the "Procession of Saint Francis" (bottom), followed immediately by his disciples and followers, holding offerings. The figures represent the people of the northeastern region (as the inhabitants of northern Brazil are called), who suffer particularly from the lack of water in the region and from famine. At the top are owls, symbolizing the strength and longevity of the people of that region.
The wood used was obtained from the heart of a hazelnut tree. The work was begun in Brazil and finished by the artist in Italy, during the exhibitions organized by the Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in various locations during the year of Brazil's celebrations in Italy.
The work is extraordinary in its execution, even in the very idea of the composition, which incorporates a large number of subjects within the verticality of the wooden support in a harmonious and symmetrical rhythm. But it is above all the execution that makes this work precious, for the precision and care of the carving. In Master Cornelio's style, one senses the full force of a local tradition, expressed in the fascinating archaism of the figures. They have a pronounced plasticity of rounded volumes, which resolves the characters with an exquisitely folk simplicity.
