Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality, as it did for the Cubists or Giorgio Morandi.
Proferio Grossi's style in his still lifes seems to tend toward hyperrealism. Indeed, one can see the painter's desire to objectively convey to the canvas, with cold lucidity, the sensory data before his eyes. The artist also demonstrates a fine technique, reminiscent of Flemish painting, in the precision with which he reproduces the various materials and the effects of light falling on them. Despite their objective clarity and while avoiding overly accentuated atmospheric effects, Proferio Grossi's technique is such that objects are naturally placed in space, with a continuity and indefiniteness of contours.
Proferio Grossi was an artist born in Vignale in 1923 and died in Parma in 2000. He trained under the guidance of Atanasio Soldati, moving toward geometric abstraction. In 1984, he joined the Movimento Arte Concreta (Concrete Art Movement). Proferio Grossi subsequently changed his career, dedicating himself to figurative art, namely, painting objects, which earned him great critical and public acclaim. This dialectic between abstract and figurative characterizes the entire final period of Grossi's work.
