Description of the work
Description of the work
The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory element. The work is inspired by Paul Gauguin's "Still Life with a Fan."
This work is highly significant in Paul Gauguin's artistic production and, as a reproduction from life, sheds light on his vision of reality. Gauguin was not interested in accurately recording sensory data; rather, he wanted to convey a summary image of objects, yet one with universal value. For this reason, the fruits take on the appearance of geometric shapes, simplifying their true nature. In this still life, we still sense Gauguin's strong interest in plasticity, with a type of exploration that links him to Paul Cézanne.
The work is part of a collection called "The Protagonists of Art," which features reproductions inspired by the works of the great masters of art history. The series consists of graphics created by Roman artisans using the silkscreen method. The resulting plate was then immersed in a 24K gold solution.
