The highly eclectic and varied production of artist Tonino Dal Re ranges from the recurring theme of cycling races to more intimate, everyday scenes dedicated to the rural world, and even truly surreal subjects. This is demonstrated in this collection of four works, two of which are dedicated to the study of man on horseback, which Dal Re explores with equestrian figures or scenes from equestrian competitions. In another work, we can appreciate the subject of young priests engaged in playful and amusing genre scenes, which harks back to a certain pictorial tradition and artists such as Nino Caffè and Ulisse Massaccesi. Finally, Dal Re's fascination with the animal world, often present in exotic and adventurous tones, given his long stay in Africa.
Tonino Dal Re's style, consistent throughout his work, is grounded in a keen sense of color and a direct, flowing application of color. With just a few touches of color, the painter manages to construct his subjects, ensuring a great immediacy in both landscapes and genre scenes. It can therefore be said that Dal Re's stylistic register undoubtedly stems from a distinct impressionistic influence, but this is taken to the extreme of immediacy and rapid execution. In this way, just like the Impressionists, Dal Re captures the vibrations of light and atmosphere on objects, yet at the same time exerts a more pronounced synthesis of sensory data, achieving a highly lyrical representation of reality. Tonino Dal Re's palette reflects this lyrical intimacy with nature and reality, adopting a chromatic palette that avoids excess while remaining respectful of the sensory element.
Tonino dal Re (Imola 1924-2010). A tireless participant in artistic and social life, dynamic, rich in imagination and human resources, Tonino Dal Re devoted his time to countless activities, while remaining primarily active in the artistic field, which also saw him engaged for a long time at the Ethiopian court of Negus Haile Salassie. Upon returning to Italy, he developed a new style, opposite to his previous choices, focused primarily on painting subjects that were part of a fantastical and surreal world, full of imaginative figures and horses in motion, racing, and unstoppable. In doing so, Tonino Dal Re demonstrated intellect and culture; he did not stop simply at observing with his eyes but also interpreted in his own way, with study and descriptive skill, what interested him.
