The first prototype flew for the first time in 1955 thanks to SAS, which carried out the tests, and passenger transport began in 1958. The prospects were encouraging as it was the only medium-range jet available with an attractive design that inspired confidence.

The image shows a Model 10B, one of the first Air France aircraft, parked at Orly Airport awaiting take-off on a humid autumn evening in 1963. This model, with more powerful, less thirsty engines, increased range and a highly aerodynamic design, much appreciated by passengers with its unusual triangular window, was used on European routes.

The new Pratt & Whitney P&W JT8D-7 turbofan engines  based on the Caravelle 10B, with a modified leading edge design, although developed in the early 1960s, they were characterised by a low bypass ratio which resulted in a high specific thrust, i.e. a large amount of thrust compared to their weight and size, a useful reason for increasing the payload of the aircraft. They also had a quicker response.  to the request for power variations, essential for greater safety in take-off and approach maneuvers.

A huge aircraft that made the history of commercial aviation, used by dozens of airlines around the world. To date, no   The Caravelle is in active commercial and cargo service. This jet's operations ended in July 2005, with the last active-service aircraft being retired by the Congolese airline Waltair.
