The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.

This urban view of Venice is based on a solid compositional structure, constructed with architectural panels that fade toward a vanishing point slightly off-center to the right. The fundamental component for Quintavalle, however, is color, with its bright and festive hues, which he uses to resolve the entire painting. At times, the brushstrokes are more extended, creating walls, structural references for the composition, but more often, the color is applied in broad strokes. The painter uses an almost pointillist technique to highlight the vibrations of light on objects and, especially, on water.

Alfio Quintavalle is a painter known for his Venetian views, which he always interprets with a technique of broad, rapid brush strokes. The result is a rarefied, flickering snapshot of the lagoon city, which the painter renders even more poetic with vibrant, brilliant colors.
