Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic currents. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Many of Quirino De Ieso's compositions, especially those in which he uses the "reticulated" technique, still reference reality, but the execution method is linked to a geometric reconstruction and, therefore, to a process of abstraction.
The work features one of the techniques that made artist Quirino De Ieso popular, "overlapping ink" or "reticulated ink." The line is the main element of the composition, which develops essentially in two ways. In the figurative part of the work, where the subjects appear, the line has a sinuous shape, drawing the forms with curvilinear rhythms and synthesizing volumes and physiognomies. In the remaining space, the line takes on a decorative character, arranging itself in a tight grid that composes countless geometric motifs. These geometric elements not only have an aesthetic function, but also serve to identify the spiritual tension of the depicted scene and communicate underlying messages, in an elegant symbolist language.
Quirino De Ieso, born in San Giorgio la Molara in 1926, died in Noto on October 23, 2006. A complex artist, beyond painting, his interests also included music, mathematics, astronomy, and physics. His first exhibition of works took place in 1957 at the Milan Triennale, followed by numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad (France, England, Belgium, Poland, the United States, Malta, and Japan). His success is linked in particular to the creation of the "overlapping ink" technique, also known as "reticolato," of which he can be considered the founder.
