Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The work is a clear example of an expressionist landscape. Reality is interpreted in an extremely synthetic manner, with a remarkable exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth. The landscape is constructed through a simple layering of color. The hues themselves are not entirely true to reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation.
Quirino De Ieso, born in San Giorgio la Molara in 1926, died in Noto on October 23, 2006. A complex artist, beyond painting, his interests also included music, mathematics, astronomy, and physics. His first exhibition of works took place in 1957 at the Milan Triennale, followed by numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad (France, England, Belgium, Poland, the United States, Malta, and Japan). His success is linked in particular to the creation of the "overlapping ink" technique, also known as "reticolato," of which he can be considered the founder.
