Description of the work
Description of the work
As we're accustomed to thinking, the clown in the circus context is a character meant to inspire laughter and hilarity. What we see in the canvas, however, despite a slight smile, is a clown with sadness lurking in his eyes. As a pictorial theme, it was highly appreciated in the early 20th-century art scene, particularly in Pablo Picasso's series on the circus world. In this case, the artist explored the character in an emotional and picturesque manner. R. Biagiotti's style is characterized by intense figurative research. The half-length figure appears to us in all its emotional depth. The even brushstrokes leave no room for shading, thus making the painting heavy, presumably intentionally so as to convey a sense of anguish mixed with melancholy. From a coloristic perspective, we see the prevalence of two dominant colors, red and green, which, in stark contrast, focus the gaze on the clown's face. The only hint of shadow is that which settles on the figure's face. No adequate biographical information has been found about the artist R. Biagiotti. However, we can assume that his works can be placed within the context of 20th-century figurative art.
