Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
This painting by Cantelli significantly and exemplarily demonstrates a post-Impressionist interpretation of the landscape genre. First, the subject is realized through a coloristic synthesis that leads the artist to transcend the drawing grid and definitively unleash the potential of pictorial expression. It is precisely in this sense that Cantelli's excellent technique, deploying a decidedly structural brushstroke, is evident. Indeed, the brushstrokes are arranged on different planes, attempting to convey and explore the shapes of objects, the ripples of the sea, the formation of clouds. This also leads Cantelli to use a rather textured color that develops slightly in relief. The result is a landscape that, in addition to being characterized by a fresh execution, further explores the perception of reality.
As we can see from the execution of this seascape, Cantelli stands out for his post-Impressionist landscape production. In his painting, a dense chromatic material is used to delve deeper into reality.
