Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion.
The pictorial language of artist Renzo Magnanini draws inspiration from a lively naturalism. Indeed, he possesses a remarkable technique that allows him to effortlessly portray subjects, delineate them sculpturally, and seek spatial depth. He is a painter with a highly classical bent, yet his brushstrokes possess a profound impressionistic verve that gives his works immediacy and freshness. In this way, the human figure conceived by Magnanini, thanks to the gestural nature of his brushstrokes, takes on a distinctly existential character. This prerogative is further fueled by a certain anti-naturalistic distortion, manifested in the marked elongation and tapering of the bodies. This type of distortion heightens the expressiveness of the figures, giving them emotional as well as anatomical connotations.
Iro Magnanini, known to all as Renzo Magnanini (Gonzaga 1920, Bentivoglio 2006), was an Italian painter and sculptor. He created many religious paintings, generally focusing on the representation of the human figure. He also painted many still lifes, as well as landscapes and floral subjects. He fought in East Africa in the 1940s. Returning from captivity in South Africa, in 1948 he resumed his artistic activity, a pursuit he continued throughout his life. His works are exhibited in the Basilica of San Domenico in Bologna, the Russian Museum in Yaroslavl, and the famous Russian State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
