Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In Raimondo Roberti's Romantic views, as in the present work, the quotidian aspect prevails, the frank and sincere realism of everyday life in a city setting.
The artist Raimondo Roberti's style presents a perfect fusion of realism and a delicate impressionistic rendering of sensory details. On the one hand, the artist precisely describes the view in all its details, with a strong sense of urban reality and the everyday life of simple life. On the other, his refined painting technique allows him to convey a sense of immediacy to the canvas, thanks to rapid brushstrokes charged with atmospheric vibrations. Light thus reverberates on objects, but without interfering with the precise description of reality. The entire view is thus characterized by a vivid luminosity that is revealed, by contrast, in the play of shadows. The use of a palette of soft and delicate colors also serves this purpose.
Raimondo Roberti was born in 1947 in Naples. His family, who were high-ranking officers in the Royal Fleet, greatly influenced Roberti and his lifelong fascination with all things maritime. His family's secluded villa was very close to the estate of G. Gigante. Gigante was a leading exponent of classical Neapolitan painting, a style known as the Posillipo School, an artistic style Roberti would study later in life. Because of his interest in American culture, Roberti moved to the United States to immerse himself in the American Experience while pursuing his career as an artist. His stay in America was short-lived due to his love for his native Italy. Roberti's paintings reflect the traditions of Italian art. Roberti is best known for his harbor scenes, the Italian coast, and his classical scenes of Venice. Roberti is able to offer the world exact impressions of the vibrant life of a port city or the quiet elegance, romance and rugged terrain that embraces the Mediterranean.
