Description of the work
Description of the work
The depiction of animals in art has ancient origins, even appearing in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of various ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era. In his sculptures and engravings, Remo Bombardieri focused his research on the figure of the horse. A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes or equestrian monuments, and for artists, representing it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering has always been a challenge.
Unlike other works in which Remo Bombardieri treats the horse in a predominantly expressionistic style, designed to enhance the steed's dynamism, this sculpture offers an exquisitely classical vision, dictated by principles of naturalistic rendering, harmony, and balance. The representation remains based on a clear emphasis on plasticity, modeled softly and with refined anatomical precision. Compared to a "real life" rendering, however, we can note an elegant idealization of the subject, consistent with the classicist spirit underlying this work. However, the work features some realistic details that bring the execution more alive, such as the dilated nostrils, the pulsating veins running across the muzzle, and the movement of the mane in the wind. This is possible thanks to Remo Bombardieri's extraordinary sculptural technique, which adds a touch of refinement while also lending his work a certain patina of antiquity by artfully creating areas of oxidation in the material.
Remo Bombardieri was a sculptor from Brescia, born in 1936 and passed away in 2021. A student of Domenico Lusetti, after his early work in painting and sculpture, he chose to devote himself entirely to the latter, with a constantly evolving language between figurative and abstraction that earned him international recognition. His vast production includes thousands of works, created thanks to his expertise in working with a wide range of materials, from iron and bronze to wood, ceramics and fiberglass. He designed the monument commemorating those deported to the Nazi extermination camps in Piazzale Cremona in Brescia, inaugurated in 1982 by the then President of the Republic, Sandro Pertini.
