Description of the work
Description of the work
Remo Brindisi was a prolific Italian artist, not only in Europe but also internationally. His encounters with artists such as Felice Carena, Ardengo Soffici, and Ottone Rosai in Florence provided him with the tools to enrich his pictorial research. His painting style is strongly expressionist, with informal tendencies, yet still features vibrant forms and colors. In this work, the artist depicts an imaginary square that, however, finds parallels in reality; for example, in the background, the façade of the Cathedral of San Giorgio in Ferrara is visible. This is a limited-edition print. This means the work is based on a matrix that allows for multiple reproductions of the same subject. There are various types of printmaking, including woodcut, aquatint, etching, silkscreen, and many others, such as lithography. All these techniques are not simple prints, but graphic art created through the direct intervention of the artist's hand. The word lithography comes from the Greek and literally means "writing on stone." The technique exploits the mutual repulsion between aqueous and greasy materials. The artist, on a specially prepared stone, begins tracing a drawing with a greasy pen. This drawing must mirror the intended representation. When pressed, the paper absorbs only the ink previously applied to the drawing. Precisely because this technique offers the painter great freedom, it is the closest to a real drawing. Once the desired print run is reached, the matrix is "crossed out," meaning it is disfigured so that no further copies can be released onto the market, beyond those desired by the artist.
Remo Brindisi's style is structured around important pillars that make it unique and recognizable. Brindisi was known for his bold, vibrant colors; in this case, the prevalence of yellow, a vibrant color, paired with gray, contributes to the scene's complexity. Beyond color and drawing, the artist's works are gestural and figurative, making the composition dynamic and well-balanced. The artist's expressiveness, therefore, emerges through color, texture, and the lines that cut the paper.
Remo Brindisi is one of the most prolific painters of the Italian twentieth century. Born in Rome in 1918, he lived a life marked by cultural and artistic commitment. From 1935 onwards, he attended courses at the Centro Sperimentale di Scenografia e Nudo (Experimental Center of Scenography and the Nude) at the Academy on Via Ripetta in Rome. That same year, he received a scholarship that allowed him to travel to Urbino to pursue a five-year course. During his many study trips, he met Carlo Cardazzo, an important gallery owner who discovered many of the most renowned artists of the post-World War II era, and he had the opportunity to exhibit at his Milanese gallery for many years. While many know him for his portraits and landscape scenes depicting Venice, marked by a strong chromatic impact and expressionistic style, he also left his mark on the history of the twentieth century with major politically themed series such as "Reazionario in azione" (Reactionary in Action), "Oppositori in lotta" (Oppositionists in Struggle), and "Storia del Fascismo" (History of Fascism), the latter now held at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. He also opened his own house museum, which he donated to the municipality of Comacchio. It exhibits his own works as well as those of the most important exponents of Italian art of the last century.
