Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the Classical era, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a protagonist within the new aesthetic concepts brought by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. In this sculpture by Remo Brindisi, the female figure holds a dove, a precise symbolic reference to the theme of peace. The symbolism derives from the biblical episode of the dove that, bringing Noah an olive branch, indicated the end of the Great Flood.
This sculpture is particularly interesting for appreciating artist Remo Brindisi's study of the human figure. The basis of the representation is the reality of a concrete and tangible image, immediately relatable to the subject. However, the artist, at the same time, feels the need to go beyond mere phenomenal reality and integrate it with his own subjectivity. For this reason, the figure undergoes unnatural deformations, which nevertheless play a fundamental role in its expression. In this case, dynamism is achieved through an elongated form that transcends all natural laws and must be interpreted entirely aesthetically, while the movement itself has a somewhat frenetic quality. The form is sketched in a summary and synthetic manner, on a very smooth surface that, lending an iconic character to the work, enhances the tension of the movement.
Remo Brindisi was born in Rome in 1918 and died in Lido di Spina in 1996. His first solo exhibition was held in Florence in 1940. From that moment on, he enjoyed great renown. His painting cycles, "Venezie", "Oppositori", "Pastorelli", and "Maternita", are famous. He also painted a cycle on the history of Fascism. His works have been exhibited in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad (Paris, Nice, Milan, Venice, Rome, Cairo, and São Paulo, Brazil). Between the 1940s and 1950s, he participated in various editions of the Rome Quadrennial and the Venice Biennale.
