Remo Brindisi - Faces

This painting can be considered a canonical example of Remo Brindisi's art: it is part of a series of paintings known as pastorals. In these works, the painter depicts a figure carrying or accompanied by a sheep or goat. We can consider the work closely linked to the Christian religion and the symbolism of the "Good Shepherd."

Remo Brindisi's works are based on a strong expressionism and a partial abstraction of the subject, often rendered in minimalist terms. He exploits the impact of bright, contrasting colors applied across vast fields without any chiaroscuro. In his drawings, however, he uses soft, sinuous lines, often curved, all rendered with great painterly fluidity. He thus creates a flat, essential representation with a strong emotional impact and highly recognizable within the visual landscape.

Remo Brindisi is one of the most prolific painters of the Italian twentieth century. Born in Rome in 1918, he lived a life marked by cultural and artistic commitment. From 1935 onwards, he attended courses at the Centro Sperimentale di Scenografia e Nudo (Experimental Center of Scenography and the Nude) at the Academy on Via Ripetta in Rome. That same year, he received a scholarship that allowed him to travel to Urbino to pursue a five-year course. During his many study trips, he met Carlo Cardazzo, an important gallery owner who discovered many of the most renowned artists of the post-World War II era, and he had the opportunity to exhibit at his Milanese gallery for many years. While many know him for his portraits and landscape scenes depicting Venice, marked by a strong chromatic impact and expressionistic style, he also left his mark on the history of the twentieth century with major politically themed series such as "Reazionario in azione" (Reactionary in Action), "Oppositori in lotta" (Oppositionists in Struggle), and "Storia del Fascismo" (History of Fascism), the latter now held at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna in Rome. He also opened his own house museum, which he donated to the municipality of Comacchio. It exhibits his own works as well as those of the most important exponents of Italian art of the last century.
