Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
Remo Squillantini's pictorial language is aimed at describing bourgeois society with touches of biting irony: the composition is deliberately childish, the figures are all crowded in the foreground, and the subjects are caricatured, their expressions inspiring a sense of emptiness. Squillantini's language in this lithograph has strong connections to the German New Objectivity movement. The same simplified and childish interpretation of realism based on a marked plasticity is evident, although Squillantini's forms have a more material consistency. We find the same cynical nature of painters like George Grosz and Otto Dix in lashing out at their own society with lucid irony.
Remo Squillantini was a painter born in Stia in 1920 and died in Florence in 1996. He began his career as an illustrator, working for both Italian and international publishers. He later devoted himself exclusively to painting, creating a series of ironic and grotesque characters aimed at scathingly satirizing contemporary society. He also occasionally revisited works of the past, always with an ironic twist.
