Description of the work
Description of the work
In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is simultaneously charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In Renato Bolcioni's paintings, abstract and figurative blend almost seamlessly. Even his favorite subjects are strongly symbolic. Bolcioni loves to compose crowded scenes, rituals, or processions. Everything, however, is transfigured into an extremely experimental language, always striving for strong expressiveness.
The processions and other choral scenes painted by Renato Bolcioni are characterized by the artist's highly personal interpretation of the subjects. Bolcioni has developed a unique form of language in which the elegantly symbolic narrative is presented through a painting style tending toward expressionistic synthesis, distorting the subjects and distorting them with a vehement pictorialism. All this reinforces the dynamism but also the hermeticism of the scenes. The subjects appear as the result of elegant pictorial syntheses, reiterated to the point of absurdity, in the excitement of the movements or in the long processions of the processions. The presences become apparitions, thanks also to Bolcioni's neutral palette, verging on monochrome.
Renato Bolcioni was born in Pistoia on October 8, 1891, and died in 1960. A student of Ubaldo Magnavacca of Modena, from a young age he showed marked inclinations towards painting and music. A restless spirit, he traveled the world, applying himself to any job to earn a living. Only around 1925 did he return to Pistoia and take up his palette again. Since then, he has held numerous exhibitions in Viareggio, Prato, Florence, and his hometown, garnering widespread acclaim. A fiery and impulsive landscape painter, he possesses a deeply symbolic sense of reality.
