Description of the work
Description of the work
The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and Modern Ages, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. One of Renato Borsato's favorite subjects is his city, Venice. Canal views are often combined with highly characteristic female figures, who frequently recur in this painter's compositions.

The work displays a marked expressionist vocation, which emphasizes the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of figures, using highly synthetic lines. In this sense, Renato Borsato demonstrates a distinct peculiarity that characterizes his style, not only in his easel work but also in his prints: a penchant for painting based entirely on color. In Borsato, color is distributed in compact areas and divided into various zones. The different areas of color, like a mosaic, form the object, which, through this decomposition achieved through color, gains in expressiveness. The result is a type of representation of the view that, in addition to its lightness and immediacy, presents specific emotional connotations, in keeping with the painter's expressionist language.
Renato Borsato is a painter who lives and works in Venice, where he was born in 1927. His career flourished especially in the 1950s, when he exhibited his work at numerous events both in Italy and abroad. He participated twice in the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale.
