Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Renata Cervellati's landscapes demonstrate how this artist, throughout her career, has reached a post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim, therefore, is not to capture the sensory aspect of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstrokes, rich in texture, intervene, breaking down the space into different planes, despite the simplicity of the representation, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus, within a substantially two-dimensional surface, compressed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the artist with broad, dense brush strokes or more calligraphic flourishes. Chromatically, moreover, the entire surface of the work is blended with a unifying palette. Warm, brown tones, inspired by Bologna's urban views, predominate.
Renata Cervellati was a Bolognese painter. She was essentially a landscape painter: her works feature views of Bologna and the countryside around the Reno River. Her painting style is distinguished by a pronounced synthetism, achieved entirely through color. Renata Cervellati definitively dismantled the drawing grid, allowing color to flow freely across the canvas and convey to the viewer the emotional connection to the places depicted in her works. For this reason, her style, while still highly recognizable and original, moves between post-impressionism and expressionism, seeking to definitively transcend the simple description of sensory data to achieve a true spirituality of the landscape.
