Description of the work
Description of the work
A portrait of a female face, presumably that of Marta Marzotto. A dominant figure in the painter's art, his muse and lover.
The work is a multiple executed on a metal plate and can therefore be classified as a sculptural technique, especially in bas-relief. The work in question demonstrates the master's incisive, drawing style. The female profile stands out strongly and powerfully against the metal, revealing the master's experience, who, with a steady hand and a few lines, manages to create a highly expressive face.
Renato Guttuso was born in Sicily in 1911. Known for his expressionist and neorealist style, he was one of the most celebrated artists of 20th-century Italian painting. Social and political themes became central to his artistic production, with a particular focus on the struggles of the oppressed and the freedom of ideals. He died in 1987 in Rome, leaving a considerable body of work to posterity.
