Description of the work
Description of the work
An undisputed master of contemporary realism, Renato Guttuso shaped his artistic research not only by a closeness to social issues but also by a concrete investigation of subjects through painting and graphics. For this reason, his etchings are often pure realism, in which the artist creates portraits, anatomical details, or figures of flowers and fruit to study their plasticity and their rendering within the complex space conceived by the Sicilian artist. In Renato Guttuso's etchings, we can fully perceive his desire to achieve concrete realism, both in his choice of subjects and in the manner of perceiving and representing them.
The work can be considered an "artist's proof" in which Renato Guttuso sought to refine his drawing technique. The composition achieves a maximum naturalistic rendering even through the simple formal means of the graphic line. Indeed, the artist needs only a simple, loose, and sinuous stroke to convey the fullness of the volumes onto the paper and plastically enhance this hand holding out a flower. In addition to the extraordinary precision in capturing the sensory data, Guttuso has brought it to life through the play of shadows, achieved through precise hatching, which gently blurs the contours and renders them undefined. The realist element of Guttuso's art is also significant, and in this work it emerges through the characterization of the anatomy with expressionistic verve.
Renato Guttuso, born in Bagheria in 1911 and died in Rome in 1987, was a painter deeply involved in politics and social issues. His artistic commitment stemmed from his socialist ideals and his outrage over social injustice and abuses of power. He participated in the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti group, developing a Realist-Expressionist style of painting, developing his "social art." Guttuso's most important works, expressing his Neorealist art, were masterpieces such as Ficilazione in Campagna (Fucilation in the Countryside) and Fuga dall'Etna (Escape from Etna). He was also elected senator twice, in 1976 and 1979, for the Italian Communist Party.
