Description of the work
Description of the work
Social themes in art began to gain prominence in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the spread of social questions throughout European societies. The work of painters such as Millet and Daumier, for example, favored subjects related to life in the fields, factory work, or strikes. In Italy, among the first painters to engage deeply with social themes were Pellizza da Volpedo and, in the contemporary era, Renato Guttuso.
In this print, Renato Guttuso, an artist always inclined to the exaltation, even geometric, of volumes and plasticity, can instead appreciate a more synthetic execution, full of freshness. Undoubtedly inspired by the subject, a popular, almost folkloristic figure, the artist offers a representation charged with immediacy, in which the swift, black lines rapidly synthesize the character. The realist element, typical of Guttuso's art, is also significant, and in this work too, it emerges through the characterization of the physiognomy with expressionistic verve.
Renato Guttuso, born in Bagheria in 1911 and died in Rome in 1987, was a painter deeply involved in politics and social issues. His artistic commitment stemmed from his socialist ideals and his outrage over social injustice and abuses of power. He participated in the Fronte Nuovo delle Arti group, developing a Realist-Expressionist style of painting, developing his "social art." Guttuso's most important works, expressing his Neorealist art, were masterpieces such as Ficilazione in Campagna (Fucilation in the Countryside) and Fuga dall'Etna (Escape from Etna). He was also elected senator twice, in 1976 and 1979, for the Italian Communist Party.
