Description of the work
Description of the work
Renato Mambor was a leading figure in the Piazza del Popolo School. This group of painters met at the Caffè Rosati and shared an artistic language inspired by Pop Art, but with a new sensibility also influenced by the experiments of American Abstract Expressionism. The work draws on a Pop aesthetic in its use of symbolic elements and their serial repetition. Pop Art emerged in the United States in the second half of the 20th century as a result of artists' interest in and criticism of the contemporary "consumer society." All expressions of Pop Art imply a sort of dual connection with the world of consumerism and the mass media. On the one hand, the artwork is reduced to a mere consumer product, thanks to the use of advertising language in the works and their serial reproduction through mechanical processes. On the other hand, it is precisely advertising images and consumer goods that become works of art themselves, as the most genuine and truthful expression of the new society.
Renato Mambor evokes contemporary society with his rationalist art, indebted to a mechanical aesthetic more closely related to the world of design than painting. Thus, reality, even everyday objects, become iconic, lifeless motifs, whose function is to replicate and arrange itself within the space of the work in order to interact with Mambor's abstract geometries. Everything, therefore, is reduced to a calculated balance of pure lines, shapes, and colors.
Renato Mambor was a Roman artist born in 1936 and passed away in 2014. He was a key figure in the capital's art scene in the 1960s, alongside Schifano, Tano Festa, Franco Angeli, and others. His first exhibition took place in 1959 at the Galleria Appia Antica, and from there he embarked on a long career studded with numerous awards. He also devoted himself assiduously to cinema, both experimental and as an actor. Since 1975, he has directed the Gruppo Trousse theater company, focusing on an inner exploration of the human sphere, especially its cognitive, emotional, and nervous aspects.
