Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The execution remains figurative, where tangible reality is still discernible. However, the painter, with his interpretation, applies various stylistic strains in an expressionist vein. There is no high degree of abstraction, yet the figures are not delineated at a physiognomic level and feature only rough features. More than anything, as is typical in his graphic works, Bussotti transforms his surrealist nature into delightful caricatures. This is precisely what happens in this lithograph; the result is a lively and intriguing drawing, capable of stimulating the viewer's attention.
Renzo Bussotti, born in Florence in 1925 and passed away in Padua in 2017, was a partisan during the war and moved to Padua after the conflict. There, he was welcomed by his maternal uncle, Tono Zancanaro, who had already embarked on the path of his creative and imaginative artistic language. Bussotti always lived a secluded life, leading a quiet life. Throughout his life, he cultivated his anti-graceful style of painting, in a sort of surreal dimension dominated by concerns about war and atomic weapons.
