Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
Even in the floral subject, Renzo Grazzini interprets reality extremely synthetically, with a remarkable exercise in reduction. The surface is completely two-dimensional, with no concessions to spatial depth, thanks to a layering of diluted and transparent color. The colors themselves lack a close relationship to reality, lending themselves to a more spiritual than naturalistic interpretation. The composition, built on overlapping chromatic zones, harks back to the essential geometries of Ottone Rosai, creating a highly evocative representation of reality.
Renzo Grazzini (Florence, 1912 – 1990). Having graduated in 1934 from the Porta Romana Art Institute in Florence, where he later taught, Renzo Grazzini was influenced by Ottone Rosai from a young age. The postwar period marked a radical shift in his art: after an early focus on geometric-abstract language, from 1953 his interest focused on neorealist syntax. Close to writers such as Vasco Pratolini, Elio Vittorini, and Romano Bilenchi, in the 1960s his research shifted toward a personal figurative expressionism. During his career, he participated in the 6th, 7th, and 8th Rome Quadrennials and the 25th and 26th Venice Biennales. His works are held in private and public collections, including the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the War in Europe Museum in Washington, and the Gallery of Modern Art at Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
