Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Renzo Mercatini's style displays the same refined ingenuity typical of a naive painter. This can be seen in the spontaneity with which he approaches his subject, but also in his choice to depict an everyday scene from a humble existence. However, Mercatini's affiliation with the Livorno area, strongly influenced by post-Macchiaioli art, is also evident. This can be seen in Mercatini's post-Impressionist approach, especially in the water surface. Renzo Mercatini was born in Chianni in 1924 and died in Livorno in 1984. He was a painter with a naïve approach to his subjects, which are often genre scenes inspired by the lives of the humble. However, his technique has a certain post-impressionist tendency, with some symbolist touches in his use of color.
