Description of the work
Description of the work
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.
In this work, the fundamental process is the brutal synthesis of the subject, which is reduced to a silhouette whose contours have a sinuous, curvilinear rhythm, inscribed within a circle. In this sense, the work already has strong affinities with Matisse, whose taste for gigantism it also reflects.
Renzo Sommaruga was born in Milan in 1917, but lived his entire life in Verona, where he passed away in 2012. He was an engraver, sculptor, painter, poet, musician, book publisher, and printer. His career began in the 1930s and culminated with the publication of an anthology in 1950. In 1952, he illustrated three poems by Eugenio Montale. He also exhibited his work outside Italy, in cities such as Paris and London. In 1964, he opened his own printing press.
