Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Mario Restaino's paintings frequently feature works depicting horses pulling carriages or racing, as in this work.
As we can see in this work, Mario Restaino's artistic language always moves within the realm of a frank realism, which, however, is cloaked by the painter in a delicate, impressionistic lyricism. Indeed, the subject is depicted in an absolutely sincere manner, free from any form of idealization. The relationship with the viewer is direct, charged with strong expressive characterization. From a pictorial perspective, the application of color is extremely lively, dynamic, with impressionistic overtones. Thus, the depiction of the horse race is charged with vibrations that are not only luminous but also existential. The subject, then, in its profound realism, is transfigured into a more poetic dimension determined by its very being. Noteworthy in this particular work, dedicated to a trotting race, is the composition conceived by Restaino, which lends itself perfectly to accentuating the movement of the horses competing. Indeed, the diagonal cut, also emphasized by the application of color, enhances the momentum of the subjects competing.
Mario Restaino is an important 20th-century Italian painter. His favorite subjects are clowns and horses. In his paintings, he developed a personal poetics in which the realistic interpretation of his subjects is transfigured by a delicate, impressionistic brushstroke.
