Description of the work
Description of the work
The work is a beautiful example of the sculptural exploration of artist Riccardo Licata. Known for his pictorial production, which focuses on informal sign-based forms, Licata has also created notable three-dimensional works using a material with a strong aesthetic impact, Murano glass.
Riccardo Licata's sculptures find immediate and objective aesthetic value in the formal purity that the crafting of precious Murano glass can impart. This is evident in this beautiful object, where the living material of the composition encapsulates all the beauty of a constantly evolving biomorphic entity. The transparent casing creates an environment in which Licata's trademark element seems to be suspended: the enigmatic and mysterious sign. The aesthetic appeal of this sculpture is further enhanced by the reflections created on its crafted surface.
Riccardo Licata was born in Turin in 1929 and passed away in Venice in 2014. He lived between Venice and Paris, where, after being Gino Severini's assistant, he took over as professor of mosaic at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial, as well as other important international events. His language is composed of a kind of alphabet that he defines as a "graphic-pictorial writing" and which draws inspiration from music.
