Description of the work
Description of the work
In this work, artist Riccardo Licata creates a landscape that can be described as fully expressionist. Phenomenal reality undergoes a remarkable formal synthesis, and the landscape is represented as a collection of chromatic zones. The composition is constructed through a drawing of short, vibrant lines. But above all, it is the choice of color that determines the expressionism of this painting. The bright, almost aggressive hues do not reflect natural truth, but rather communicate an emotional state, a spiritual state.
Indeed, Riccardo Licata's approach to informal art is neither material (like the French artists Fautrier and Dubuffet) nor gestural (like Pollock's action painting). His artistic language is instead symbolic, finding a parallel in Italy with Giuseppe Capogrossi. Thus, in this landscape, he maintains a minimal connection with reality, but transforms it into an extreme synthesis, made of signs, colors, and shapes.
Riccardo Licata was born in Turin in 1929 and passed away in Venice in 2014. He lived between Venice and Paris, where, after being Gino Severini's assistant, he took over as professor of mosaic at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial, as well as other important international events. His language is composed of a kind of alphabet that he defines as a "graphic-pictorial writing" and which draws inspiration from music.
