Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
The painting can be defined as a genre scene not only because of its subject matter, a folk scene, but also because of the painter's objective and highly didactic language. The work's approach is figurative, and Riccardo Pellegrini demonstrates his skill in achieving a perfect realistic rendering in a representation rich in exquisite detail. Nevertheless, the painter does not shy away from using a cursive style, composed of rapid strokes, to give his work greater vivacity and freshness.
Riccardo Pellegrini (Milan, 1863 – Crescenzago, 1934). Educated in Romantic Milan, he studied in Rome and Naples, under Domenico Morelli. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, including England, France, and Spain, the latter a major source of inspiration for the rustic Spanish subjects of many of his paintings. An exhibition of 19 of his paintings was held in Pisa. His trip to Spain also inspired his work as an illustrator, which saw him create drawings for the major magazines of the time. While in Spain, he illustrated Cervantes' Don Quixote and Alain-René Lesage's Gil Blas. He also created many postcard subjects that are now collectibles.
