Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered equally important as historical or religious ones. The painter Riccardo Tosti, in his work, displays an absolute predilection for genre scenes of a popular and anecdotal nature. In his works, the Trieste-born artist immortalizes the peaceful and tranquil existence of his fellow citizens in a decidedly candid narrative with a realist flavour.
Riccardo Tosti's works fall within the genre scene category not only because of their subjects—popular scenes—but also because of the painter's objective and highly didactic language. The work is always figurative, with clear, spacious frames, where Riccardo Tosti demonstrates his skill in achieving a perfect realistic rendering, rich in detail and anecdotal details. All this is achieved without idealizing filters, but through a spontaneous representation that conveys reality as it is. Beyond this profound sense of truth, there is another absolutely significant characteristic of Riccardo Tosti's artistic practice, which has led him to be called the "painter of the sun." We are talking about Tosti's extraordinary use of light in all his works. A consistently warm, sunny light that characterizes the scenes with intense atmospheric vibrations. For this reason, from a formal standpoint, Riccardo Tosti doesn't shy away from using a cursive style, composed of rapid strokes, to ensure greater vivacity and freshness in his execution. Thus, the brushstrokes display a certain level of synthesis, without ever compromising the clarity of the anecdotal and realistic narrative, but just enough to infuse the scene with a delicate lyricism enhanced by the light.
Riccardo Tosti was born in Trieste in 1910 and passed away in 1986. An essentially realist painter, his work was primarily devoted to illustrating life in his hometown in bourgeois and popular scenes. Famous above all for his use of light in his paintings, he was nicknamed "the painter of the sun." Throughout his career, he held over 100 solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He exhibited in Oslo, Brussels, Munich, Lugano, Monte Carlo, and New York, always achieving great public and critical acclaim.
