Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject Riccardo Tosti presents is a bucolic and serene setting. Genre painting is a term used to describe paintings depicting scenes of everyday life. These works focus on common subjects and ordinary activities, such as domestic chores, entertainment, market stalls, and tavern scenes, offering a realistic and often intimate portrait of the lives of ordinary people. This type of pictorial narrative is typically accompanied by realist and naturalist painting, which encompasses a scene that can also convey a moral, social, or humorous message. Tosti's painting style is recognized by its compositional structure, which emphasizes clear framing, demonstrating his ability to achieve a perfect realistic rendering in a representation rich in detail and anecdotal details. The reality he portrays is presented as it is, unfiltered, with particular attention to the use of light. This distinctive quality has led to him being called the "painter of the sun." His use of a cursive style, composed of rapid strokes, ensures greater vivacity and freshness in his execution. Thus, his brushstrokes display a certain level of synthesis, without ever compromising the clarity of the anecdotal and realistic narrative, but just enough to infuse the scene with a delicate lyricism enhanced by the light. Riccardo Tosti was born in Trieste in 1910 and passed away in 1986. A primarily realist painter, his work was primarily devoted to illustrating life in his hometown in bourgeois or popular scenes. Famous especially for his use of light in his paintings, he was nicknamed "the painter of the sun." Throughout his career, he held over 100 solo exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He exhibited in Oslo, Brussels, Munich, Lugano, Monte Carlo, and New York, always achieving great public and critical acclaim.
