The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of the depiction of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the artist's in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory data. In the specific case of this work, the artist remains within the specific realm of phenomenal reality, attempting a life-like reproduction of reality, which nevertheless infuses a delicate lyricism.

The execution of this still life, based on a work by Christian Berentz held in the Galleria Corsini in Rome, demonstrates the artist's desire to provide a precise description of reality, as is the tradition of the genre, while also transfiguring it into a heartfelt, lyrical interpretation. The work was revived by Christian Berentz, a German Baroque painter who lived between 1658 and 1722. He was one of the most important still life painters in Rome between the 17th and 18th centuries. He first studied with Kamphusen in Hamburg and is documented in Rome after 1680, where he joined the circle of Dutch painters.
