Rizzo - Southern Landscape

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The artist's language in this work draws on a genuinely Impressionist conception of artistic creation. The painter uses rapid hatching to construct the view and, through brushstrokes, seeks to capture every subtle vibration of color and light. Rizzo's brushstrokes, however, are rather broad and, compared to the French Impressionists, take on a more structural function, attempting to give shape to the objects and arrange their volumes plane upon plane. Even in terms of palette, Rizzo adheres to an Impressionist style in this work. The entire surface of the work is unified by the predominance of brown tones, creating a view with a precise and unique light and atmosphere.
