Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
Roberto Merelli is an artist who has based his artistic language on an expressionism of color. The figures are subjected to a process of formal synthesis, through a lively application of gestural marks and a dynamic flow. The subjects thus appear extremely mobile and lively, shaken by existential vibrations. Color transcends the naturalistic to acquire spiritual meanings.
Roberto Merelli was born in Venice in 1936. He trained at the Scuola Libera del Nudo of the Venice Academy. He has participated in several solo and group exhibitions. Among his numerous accolades, he was invited to the XXXIV Venice Biennale in 1968 for his "Figurative Arts" series.
