Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
The first key element that emerges from an analysis of this painting by Robert Wollinger is the rationality of the composition. Although the painter measures the space in perfect aerial perspective, applying the sfumato technique with remarkable skill, the landscape is nevertheless framed within a clear convergence of orthogonal lines. The objects are arranged on this convergence in an almost completely symmetrical fashion, creating a perfect harmony of the elements. Formally, Wollinger pursues an impeccable naturalistic rendering, based on a very marked drawing structure. The objects' volumes are plastically highlighted, and every detail is depicted with extreme precision. Regarding lighting, the entire scene is characterized by a humid atmosphere, confirming the painter's intention to achieve a compact representation and a rational aesthetic.
